And I Darken
‘”On our wedding night,” she said, “I will cut out your tongue and swallow it. Then both tongues that spoke our marriage vows will belong to me, and I will be wed only to myself. You will most likely choke to death on your own blood, which will be unfortunate, but I will be both husband and wife and therefore not a widow to be pitied.”’ This quote basically sums up Lada the protagonist of And I Darken. And I Darken starts in Wallachia with Lada and her brother, Radu, are small children. When they are 13 and 12 their father abandons them in the Ottoman courts. They then become friends with the illegitimate son of the sultan and form a bond. Lada takes advantage of Mehmed’s love while Radu desperately begs for even a part of the love Mehmed has for his sister. I loved this book and read it in 2 days. I am impatiently waiting for my hold so I can read the sequel.
